THE SOUND OF COMFORT

In my 2D design class we were tasked with creating a pattern for a client. Our client could be anyone, real or fictional, so I chose Alba DeTamble from Audrey Niffengger's novel "The Time Traveler's Wife". I decided that I would design a pattern for a comforter that would go in her bedroom, thus this pattern "The Sound of Comfort" was born. As I designed this pattern it was important for me to know that this comforter would have to be appealing to her at all points in her life, regardless of her age, because it would be going in the house that she ends up in every time she time traveled. Due to this fact I wanted colors to ensure that were not heavily saturated so that they were young and playful, while still being sophisticated.

This pattern was heavily influenced my three things, the violin, Frederic Chopin's arrangement "12 Etudes", and Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss". When she was young she was taught to play the violin by her grandfather, so the motif in the background is the abstracted head of a violin. As her grandfather taught her to play he used music composed my Frederic Chopin, so the motif in the foreground is based on the way the notes are arranged in his piece "12 Etudes". The shapes that make up this motif are modeled after elements of Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss" because this painting was created during the post impressionism movement. The house that Alba time travels to was built during this movement.
