BEAUTY AND RAGE

I designed this pattern as my younger sister's sixteenth birthday present. I started the research process by looking in all different places relating to her and the date of her birth. The thing that ended up being the largest influence on the final design was the Greek myth of Medusa. This was not only due to the fact that it is her favorite story from Greek mythology but also because I found a site where they described Medusa as a symbol of beauty and rage. When I read this, I realized that I had never heard a more accurate description of my beautiful sister, who I have always teased that her dominate personality trait is grumpy. The motif seen in the pattern is a R repeated and flipped over and over to create the pattern. The R represents rage while the beauty come through in the way all of the Rs fit together. She also loves ladybugs so I used a color scheme that related to them, with out using the fully saturated Red or pure black that are typically used to evoke the image of a ladybug.

After I created the repeat pattern, I found a pattern for a bag and recruited my friend who is a fashion major to help me with constructing the bag. She taught me how to cut, iron, and pin the bag to prepare for sewing, then she sewed it for me. Here is a photo of the bag.
